The Film: Trout Streams of Michigan, U.P. West

I've had a lot of very positive comments from people who have watched this film and found it entertaining and informative. I've also had some comments from locals who were not too happy about my exposing this area to a larger public audience. There is such a low human population in that area along with so many miles of quality trout streams flowing thru public forest land that I really believe the overal area is highly under utilized and their concern about increased pressure is over stated. I have plans of filming other portions of Michigan in the future. Stay tuned for updates.

Producing these films costs a lot of money and historically I have only received about 10% reimbursement from DVD and film royalties. Patreon can be a way for the public to provide support for future films.

DVD: Trout Streams of Michigan - U.P. West WATCH TROUT STREAMS OF MICHIGAN - U.P. WEST This is an introduction to my DVD Trout Streams of Michigan - U.P. West. Over 3 dozen streams are shown and discussed. Brown trout, brook trout and rainbow trout are caught. Features the western portion of Michigan's upper peninsula. Currently available via Amazon.com.
Trout stream in Porcupine Mountains State Park WATCH TROUT STREAMS OF THE PORKIES Porcupine Mountains State Park has a lot of fun brook trout streams. The best streams are discussed in the DVD Trout Streams of MI UP West. This video shows highlights of the area and gives a general discussion. Get the DVD for details about the best places to fish.
Big Carp River, Michigan WATCH BIG CARP RIVER The Big Carp River is the largest stream in Michigan's Porcupine Mountains State Park. Much of the stream receives only light fishing pressure. Throughout its length you may find brook trout.
Upper Black River, Michigan U.P WATCH UPPER BLACK RIVER The upper Black River in Michigan's Upper Peninsula is that section above or south of US Hwy 2. During the spring and fall the action is good for brook trout averaging 7 to 10 inches. A lot of public land and good access is available as it flows thru the Gogebic County Forest.
Lower Black River WATCH LOWER BLACK RIVER The lower Black River in Michigan's Upper Peninsula flows north of US Hwy 2 into Lake Superior. It contains stocked and wild brook trout as well as stocked brown trout. Most importantly it produces trophy brook trout that can exceed 20 inches. There is also a scenic by-way showcasing 5 major waterfalls that are worth seeing.
Bush Creek, Michigan U.P. WATCH BUSH CREEK I was on my way back from fishing a trout stream in Michigan's Upper Peninsula when I crossed a small stream named Bush Creek. I had never heard of Bush Creek before, it wasn't mentioned in any of my books or other sources on Michigan trout streams, so I figured I would investigate and go fish it. The stream was a pleasant surprise, being full of chubs and having a good number of brook trout too.
Brown trout from Cooks Run, MI UP West WATCH FISHING COOKS RUN Cooks Run is a designated Blue Ribbon trout stream and a tributary to the South Branch Paint River in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It runs thru the Ottawa National Forest and access is plentiful via Highway 2, Highway 16 and Basswood Road. It is one of the few spring creeks in the area and is primarily a brook trout fishery with an occasional brown trout.
Elm River, MI UP West WATCH FISHING THE ELM RIVER The Elm River is located in the western portion of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It is known as a good brook trout stream although I did have much luck the day I fished it.
Middle Branch Escanaba River, MI UP West WATCH FISHING THE ESCANABA RIVER, MIDDLE BRANCH Located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the Middle Branch Escanaba River offers many miles of trout fishing opportunities in its middle and lower sections but unfortunately does not have many access points. There are also a few smallmouth bass present.
Ford River, MI UP West WATCH FISHING THE FENCE RIVER From the confluence of its East and West Branches down to the Michigamme Reservoir, the French River in Michigan's Upper Peninsula offers 12 miles of designated blue ribbon trout fishing. The main fish is the brook trout and they can reach up to 18 inches in this great stream. While the French River flows thru National Forest land there are only a couple confusing dirt roads giving access. The fishing pressure is fairly low for a stream of this quality.
Firesteel River, MI UP West WATCH FIRESTEEL RIVER The Firesteel River is a slow, sandy tributary to Lake Superior. While brown and brook trout are present the main fish appear to be rainbow and young steelhead. It is an easy stream to wade and the action is good.
East and West Branches Firesteel River, MI UP West WATCH FIRESTEEL RIVER EAST AND WEST BRANCHES The east and west branches of the Firesteel River in Michigan's Upper Peninsula offer fishing for brook trout and young steelhead.
Ford River, MI UP West WATCH FISHING THE FORD RIVER The Ford River is one of Michigan's Blue Ribbon trout streams. Located in the Western Upper Peninsula it is known to produce brook trout up to 18 inches. The access is good as it runs thru mostly state forest land with a gravel road near by.
Gratiot River, MI UP West WATCH FISHING THE GRATIOT RIVER The Gratiot River is a tributary to Lake Superior way up north in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Besides good runs of salmon and steelhead it also has a strong resident population of brook trout which was the focus of my day fishing it.
Iron River, MI UP West WATCH FISHING THE IRON RIVER Located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the Iron River and its North Fork have a total of 12 miles of designated blue ribbon trout water. Most of the fish are brook trout. I spent a day fishing here and would agree with its blue ribbon status.
Jackson Creek, MI UP West WATCH JACKSON CREEK Jackson Creek is a tributary to Michigan's Black River in the Upper Peninsula. Brook trout are the main species and can reach sizes of 15 inches.
Iron River, MI UP West WATCH FISHING THE JUMBO RIVER The Jumbo River is a tributary to the East Branch Ontonagon River in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Below Jumbo Falls it has residential brook trout mixed in with migrating trout and salmon. Above it is strictly wild brook trout. The East and West branches also offer some good fishing for brook trout.
Little Carp River, MI UP West WATCH THE LITTLE CARP RIVER The Little Carp River is the popular fishing stream in Michigan's Porcupine Mountain State Park. Much of its length is followed by a trail. It also offers opportunities for an overnight backpacking trip. Brook trout are the catch.
Fishing the Misery River, MI UP West WATCH THE MISERY RIVER The Misery River begins in the western portion of Michigan's Upper Peninsula near Twin Lakes State Park and flows 24 miles to Misery Bay in Lake Superior. Rainbow trout and brook trout are the main fish species. Aside from the upper section here, much of the streams goes thru rugged, remote country with little access. A 4WD vehicle might get you to some spots in the lower section.
East Branch Ontonadon River, MI UP West WATCH ONTONAGON RIVER, EAST BRANCH The East Branch Ontonagon River is a blue ribbon designated trout stream in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The main fish is brook trout but brown trout, steelhead and salmon are also common species. The stream flows thru much public land and the fish can obtain a good size.
Middle Branch Ontonadon River, MI UP West WATCH ONTONAGON RIVER, MIDDLE BRANCH The Middle Branch Ontonagon River in Michigan's Upper Peninsula offers several sections of good fishing including two rated as "blue ribbon". The brook trout seems to be the most common but rainbow and brown trout are also reported to exist, and some are reported to get large. It also holds a couple scenic and popular waterfalls, particularly Bond Falls.
North Branch Otter River, MI UP West WATCH OTTER RIVER, NORTH BRANCH The North Branch Otter River is a pristine stream in the northwest portion of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It contains both wild and stocked brook trout as well as brown trout and steelhead that use the stream during their spawning migrations.
West Branch Otter River, MI UP West WATCH OTTER RIVER, WEST BRANCH The West Branch Otter River is a trout stream in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the west side. It has brook trout, young steelhead and a few brown trout. It is an easy stream to fish and wade.
Perch River, MI UP West WATCH PERCH RIVER The Perch River in Michigan's Upper Peninsula is a brook trout stream that receives relatively little angling pressure. There is only 1 easy access point but several more difficult access options are available.
Presque Isle River, MI UP West WATCH PRESQUE ISLE RIVER The Presque Isle River in Michigan's western Upper Peninsula is 42 miles long and much of that is inhabited by brook trout. For a stream of its length it gets little pressure. Most of the river runs thru national forest land and there are logging roads in the vicinity but you may have to hike and bush wack a ways to get to the water. Unlike the nearby Black River it is not known for producing trophy fish.
Presque Isle River, MI UP West WATCH PRESQUE ISLE RIVER, EAST BRANCH The East Branch Presque Isle River in Michigan's Upper Peninsula runs thru some sparsely inhabited forest land and offers brook trout as its main sport fish, along with a few chubs.
South Branch Paint River, MI UP West WATCH SOUTH BRANCH PAINT RIVER The South Branch Paint River runs the the Ottawa National Forest in Michigans Upper Peninsula. It offers 18 miles of blue ribbon designated trout water. It has wild brown and brook trout, some of which get to trophy proportions. It has many access points, is easy to wade and generally has stable water levels and temperatures.
South Branch Paint River, MI UP West WATCH SOUTH BRANCH PAINT RIVER-2 This is my second attempt at fishing and filming Michigan's South Branch Pain River. My first attempt 6 years earlier was impeded by thunderstorms. While my second attempt was also ended prematurely by similar weather I was able to explore, film, and catch more fish than originally. Also, I think it should be said that I encountered fewer anglers and caught significantly more fish than when I had first fished it. Apparently publishing a video about this stream has not caused it to be destroyed by hordes of anglers as some concerned viewers speculated.
Powder Mill Creek, MI UP West WATCH POWDER MILL CREEK Powder Mill Creek is a tributary of the Black River in the wester portion of Michigan's upper peninsula. It is primarily a brook trout fishery.
West Branch Sturgeon River, MI UP West WATCH WEST BRANCH STURGEON RIVER The West Branch Sturgeon River flows thru National Forest land and has 5 miles of designated blue ribbon water between highway 38 and West Sturgeon Falls. There are brook trout, brown trout and rainbow trout. This exists in the western portion of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
Little Union River, MI UP West WATCH BIG AND LITTLE UNION RIVERS The Big and Little Union Rivers are small but fun brook trout streams in Porcupine Mountain State Park, Michigan.
