WATCH BAXTER'S HOLLOW STATE NATURAL AREA, WI There are several Otter Creeks in Wisconsin, including a couple in Southwest Wisconsin. This Otter Creek flows thru the Baxter's Hollow State Natural Area located near Baraboo. At nearly 6,000 acres it is the largest tract of land owned by the Nature Conservatory. Not only does this provide public access to a rather fun little brook trout stream, it also preserves the watershed, keeping it in pristine condition and no doubt contributing to the quality of fishing. There is a small parking area and a trail follows the stream for several miles. The rocks of this area are referred to as baraboo quartzite. The rocks and the whole geography in general is very different from the rest of SW Wisconsin. It belongs to the Baraboo Range, which scientists believe formed 1.6 billion years ago, making it one of the most ancient rock outcrops in North America.
WATCH COPPER CREEK Near Madison, WI This Copper Creek is in LaFayette County, about an hour South of Madison, Wisconsin. It is a category 3, class 2 brown trout stream. The middle section offers the best fishing for wild brown trout.
WATCH GORDON CREEK Gordon Creek is formed by the confluence of Big Spring Creek and German Valley Branch. It is a class I trout stream flowing thru Iowa County in Southwest Wisconsin. I started my day by fishing the upper portion of Gordon Creek. Here there is a fishing easement and even a cleaning station so you don't transport any alien creatures. This upper part of the stream is narrow and by late spring can be challenging to cast due to overhanging grass. The middle portion of Gordon Creek offers a wider stream for easier casting and has a good amount of public easements. It also has some nice sized fish. The lower portion of Gordon Creek does not support trout.
WATCH LOVETTS CREEK Found in south central Wisconsin, Lovett Creek is a category 5 class 2 brown trout stream. With the exception of an occasional deep hole, the section below Cty Rd M tends to suffer from excessive sedimentation. Above M there has been habitat improvement and a public fishing easement. This area is spring fed.
WATCH MILLVILLE CREEK Millville Creek is a trout stream in Southwest Wisconsin offering about 8 miles of class II trout water. It flows thru Grant County into the Wisconsin River. Most of the lower half of Millville Creek has a fishing easement. Despite being a class II trout stream it still has a good number of trout in it. There is also a lot of spring flow to keep the water cool.
WATCH STEINER BRANCH Steiner Branch is the only brook trout stream in Lafayette County, of south central Wisconsin. You will want to fish it upstream of CTH F where rehabilitation work and a steeper gradient has created some good habitat for the trout. The stream runs along Yellowstone SP (not NP!) and has good public access. I missed several decent brook trout while fishing this cold April day.
WATCH TROUT BROOK Trout Brook is a small little trout stream near the Wisconsin/Illinois border. It does not suffer from the sedimentation problems that other trout streams in this area do and has good spring flow. I did not catch any trout but did see a few browns around 10". You can access this stream from Dunbarton Rd.
WATCH TROUT CREEK Trout Creek flows thru southwest Wisconsin not too far from Madison and offers 8 miles of trout water, about half being class I and half class II. There are a lot of wild, naturally reproducing brown trout and a few stocked brook trout present. Almost all of the brown trout are under 13 inches. The lower half runs thru the Trout Creek State Fishery Area offering an abundance of public access. Many years ago there used to be an earthen dam on Trout Creek. All that is left now is this culvert. Upstream of there is more publicly fishable creek. Trout Creek holds a special place in my memories. It was the first trout stream I ever fished, 41 years ago. I had several hits on that memorable day. Although I didn't catch any trout I did catch fishing fever and I've had that ever since. And if you ask me, how does the fishing now compare to what it was 40 years ago? I would say its about the same.
WATCH WOLF CREEK Wolf Creek is a category 5 class 2 brown trout stream about 1 hour south of Madison, WI. The first section shown is upstream of the town of Gratiot and has some public fishing easements. The 2nd section is near Cub Hollow Rd. There is limestone bedrock, springs and good looking pools but sedimentation can be an issue. |
